Got Plans? The Class of 2017 does now!

  • November 2016 marked the third time Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools participated in the nationally recognized College Application Month.

College Application Month aims to increase the number of low-income and first-generation students who enroll in college by providing them with in-school time and expert guidance to support them as they complete their applications. In 2014, six CMSD schools and in 2015, ten CMSD schools hosted a College Application Month event; in 2016, a record seventeen CMSD schools participated!

What makes College Application Month so special is that each event looks slightly different. This is because school-based college advising teams are encouraged to design workshops that fit the needs of their student body. For example, at John Marshall High School, an entire day was dedicated to a series of rotations including a college fair, a scholarship writing seminar and a college application workshop. In contrast, volunteers at the Cleveland School of the Arts sat one-on-one with specific students who needed an extra push to finish their applications.

Despite these variations, there are three consistencies at every CMSD College Application Month event: First, participating students are asked to complete at least one concrete task during the provided time. This may mean completing one application, applying to one scholarship or completing one portion of the FAFSA. Second, all schools are provided with cake and Chapstick to share with students to celebrate their accomplishments. Third, every event includes volunteers from the Compact’s higher education and community partners. This year, representatives from an impressive 13 colleges and universities and 9 community-based organizations participated in at least one CMSD College Application Month event.

With the help of our experts and a little sugar, students are able to begin their postsecondary journey with the right guidance and a positive attitude!
